Recruiting: Where Texas stands ahead of five more announcements There are at least five targets scheduled to announce decisions this week, with the possibility of one or two more. OnTexasFootball provides a Monday morning rundown of where things stand ahead of the decisions. July 8 ... Jalen Lott, WR/ATH, Frisco (Texas) Panther Creek OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star++ OTF on Lott: Oregon has the highest NIL bid, and by a decent margin. Texas and the Lott's have been talking though the weekend. OTF feels like the Ducks were the favorite starting the weekend, and we have not been told anything concrete to change that. But Texas is strongly under consi…

Some team notes that I’ve picked up the last few days… - Freshmen Kade Phillips and Graceson Littleton may be good enough in the secondary to give some upperclassmen a run for their money. Phillips as a corner and Littleton as a nickel. Both have been even better than expected all the way though spring and now summer workouts. - Also in the secondary, Kobe Black was mentioned as someone who seemingly had a breakthrough this spring and off-season. - Hopes are that Nick Brooks’ run-in with the law are behind him. Some older teammates are trying to take him under their wing a little bit. - Freshman tight end Emaree Winston was one of the surprises of the …

Just two short notes this morning as we await decisions from Marietta, Ga., linebacker Brayden Rouse and Frisco wide receiver Jalen Lott… 1. Thank you to everyone who participated in the fundraiser for the Central Texas Food Bank last night on our episode of Talkin’ Ball. We donated $2,899 as a community to the organization that is helping people in the midst of the tragic flooding in the Hill Country. Again, I’ve always wanted this to be a place where Texas fans could be proud of, and there is no prouder moment than when we come together and do something like that. 2. I spoke with someone yesterday who believes Jack Endries may make a run as the team’s top rece…

Was a bit curious this afternoon after seeing the SEC Media Days and each programs' representatives were announced. 11 of the 16 SEC programs are bringing their quarterbacks which isn't too surprising at the surface. As a result, I wanted to see what type of continuity each team was entering the season with in regards to their head coach, both coordinators and starting quarterback. In actuality, there was not a ton of turnover from 2024 to 2025. Much less than I anticipated at least. *** *** – For the first time since 2006, the SEC will return every head coach from the previous year. That includes Billy Napier and Sam Pittman who were on sco…

In what has become a theme in this recruiting class, Texas finished second on two very talented players yesterday. Close but no cigar. Sure, it’s disappointing. Any recruiting loss is. But some folks need to take a deep breath and step away from the ledge. After all, Texas already has 17 commitments, is ranked in a higher spot currently to where it was at this time last year, and there is the fact that Steve Sarkisian and his staff have proven themselves capable time and again of bringing in elite prospects before the final recruiting curtain closes. All any recruiting loss really does at this time of year is up the stakes for Texas on the remaining prospec…

2027 Targets to Know *** In case you wanted some new names to familiarize with as we inch closer and closer to the start of a new football season. A quick look at prospects to know for the 2027 cycle on the offensive side of the ball. *** Quarterback Kavian Bryant, QB, Palestine (Texas) Westwood High Peyton Houston, QB, Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian Academy It is a two horse race at the moment for the Longhorns in the 2027 cycle. Of course, other names like Gunnar Rivers, Jerry Meyer III and Malachi Ziegler will be names to monitor as well, but the two quarterbacks listed above are the only '27 QBs to hold offers from the Long…

Jamarion Carlton of Temple is expected to make his decision at 4pm today. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end is thought to be deciding among Texas, Baylor and Texas Tech. Texas was the favorite following his official visit to Austin but he has since visited the Bears in Waco. Baylor is trying to lock down local recruits more than in the recent past. We’ll see if they’re successful in doing so. The Red Raiders are a wildcard. There are rumors that Carlton’s recruitment could be similar to that of Felix Ojo. The majority of industry predictions (88-percent) suggest Baylor will be the call. ** I keep saying that Texas must worry only about who Tex…

Jamarion Carlton to Make Commitment Decision at 4:00 p.m. It is decision day for 2026 Temple EDGE Jamarion Carlton. There will be four hats on the table this afternoon when the Temple star announces his commitment: LSU, Texas, Baylor and Texas Tech. I believe Baylor has the higher offer on the table for now, and there has been momentum in favor of the Bears since June 20. Though, the relationship with LaAllen Clark should not be counted out. At this time, we feel it's highly likely that Temple defensive end Jamarion Carlton picks Baylor instead of Texas, Texas Tech and others.

Cornerback Samari Matthews out of Cornelius, N.C., will announce his college decision today at 6pm CT. Matthews, ranked the no. 57 overall prospect in the country by the 247Sports composite, is deciding between Texas, South Carolina, Clemson, Miami and Florida State. Twelve hours before his pick, Texas is thought to be the leader over South Carolina. Yet as we have seen time and time again during this recruiting cycle, things can and do change. We’ll have live coverage of the event later today. ** Matthews is an interesting case study in what winning on a national stage can do for a program and who it recruits. Before Texas had even reached o…

OTF 4-star++ Samari Matthews announcement thread Four-star++ cornerback Samari Matthews (Cornelius, N.C./Hough) will announce his commitment at 7:30 pm tonight. The 6-0.5, 185-pounder will announce out of Texas and South Carolina, with Miami and FSU having hats on the table. OnTexasFootball has continued to hear more chatter on the Texas side this week, the same as late last week and over the weekend. Matthews was the first offer by cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey when hired at Texas. Matthews and family made an unofficial visit in April, prior to June official visit. View full news story

Bang! Texas lands a commitment from 2026 Hough (N.C.) CB Samari Matthews! A big win on the trail for the Longhorns as they come out on top of South Carolina and Miami for the 6-foot+ cornerback. The Longhorns did a great job with the North Carolina native. Matthews and his family spent four days in Austin back in the spring where they took in two different spring football practices and were able to get a great look at the city of Austin and life on campus. In year one with the Longhorns, Mark Orphey has now landed his top three targets on the board with the addition of Matthews. Texas is now up to 18 commits in the class and Matthews joins Haywar…

I think some folks are starting to catch on. If Texas really wants a player, is willing to battle to the very end, then Texas has a pretty good shot in that recruitment. Yet if another team makes an out of range NIL offer, Texas simply won’t chase. Two wrongs don’t make a right, not when you’re trying to juggle adding elite players to your roster while also satisfying those already on it into the next season. That means - for Texas at least - it’s not a perfect hit rate for top-notch players. But it’s better than most and, more importantly, it strikes the right balance and builds the team the most intelligent way possible. ** I continue to think t…

So the cat’s out of the bag. Following interactions with a reporter at an event yesterday, Derrek Cooper, the nation’s top running back, is said to be heavily considering - if not favoring - Texas. It shocked some of those reporters. It didn’t shock this one. 😉 ** Some of those reporters have now changed their predictions from Miami to Texas. Some just picked Texas for the first time. That‘s what happens these days. But, before we go further, I want to caution everyone: Seven days is an eternity in recruiting. Never celebrate until it’s time to celebrate. There can be twists and turns between here and the end zone. ** Texas nee…

Here’s some news and notes I’ve picked up over the weekend regarding multiple sports on the Forty Acres. Football: - I was told yesterday that transfer QB Matthew Caldwell has been better than expected and has turned some heads. Obviously he’s not going to be a starter, but he will provide quality depth at the position. - As @Bobby Burton posted in his Sunday article, Texas could be the favorite for elite Fort Lauderde, Fla. running back Derrek Cooper. I was told yesterday that Miami is now running a distant second… and that distance continues to grow. The Hurricanes will continue to ‘recruit through the whistle’ when it comes to Cooper, but they believe …

On Texas Football coverage of SEC Media Days is brought to you by Vonlane, Flat Creek Estate Winery, Advanced Pain Care and South Point Dodge. ** What a difference a year makes. A year ago this week, pundits questioned whether or not the supposedly soft Longhorns would be ready for the rough and tumble SEC. The prevailing thought? Texas would be ill-equipped to handle a line of scrimmage league over the length of a season, that the previous year against Alabama was an anomaly. Today, those same pundits are convinced the Longhorns are legit, that Texas has a shot at an SEC and national championship, and the Horns are here to stay as a national p…
