Texas' biggest out of state wins under Sarkisian The Friday commitment of 4-star cornerback Hayward Howard Jr. out of Edna Karr High in New Orleans got me thinking about the biggest out of state wins for the Longhorns in the Steve Sarkisian era. Florida There have been a few very big recruiting wins in the state of Florida for the Texas staff to date, with more on the way in the 2026 cycle. Straight from the Boot! Texas adds to its 2026 class with a commitment from CB Hayward Howard Jr. out of Edna Karr High School in Louisiana. Howard made his commitment official in a ceremony of his high school gymnasium Friday afternoon. The Longhorns hosted Howard Jr. for an unofficial visit on April 12 where he and the family were blown away on the visit. I spoke briefly with a family member on the trip who said it was the best campus visit they had been on since the recruitment started. I read yesterday’s Jeff Howe article on the 2021 recruiting class and its importance to the Texas program and Steve Sarkisian’s success with a lot of interest. There are a couple of reasons why: 1. The positive difference I see in the 2021 class compared to many previous ones is the “development” of the class itself. Guys like Gunnar Helm, Hayden Conner and Barryn Sorrell were not projected draft picks when enrolling at Texas. They had the right attitude, were put into a good system and they developed naturally. Texas made a new scholarship offer to a class of 2026 prospect earlier today. Traeviss Stevenson of Brooks Co. High School in Quitman, Ga., was offered by Texas assistant Jeff Banks. Stevenson is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound defensive back who could play any of the three secondary positions (corner, safety or nickel). It has become a trend each year to wonder around this time of the year, when the Texas class will begin to heat up. News broke late last night that President Trump would name former Alabama coach Nick Saban and Texas Tech mega-booster Cody Campbell as co-chairs of a federal commission on college sports. This news came on the heels of the NCAA replying to objections from the judge in the House Settlement surrounding grandfathering scholarships for former players who would have been otherwise cut. Texas made six new scholarship offers yesterday. One to a class of 2026 running back, Carsyn Baker from the Atlanta area. The other five offers went to members of the class of 2027. In all, four of those 2027 offers hail from Southern California. Sunshine State 4-star++ sets June OV OnTexasFootball made a couple of calls in the Pensacola today, and picked some OV news. 4-star++ EDGE Trenton Henderson (Pensacola/Catholic) is scheduled to make an OV to Texas June 13-15. That is a shift, as the Florida Gators had been expecting to receive an OV that weekend. The 6-4.5, 225-pounder is also scheduled to make OV’s to Auburn May 16-18, LSU May 30-June 2, Michigan June 6-8 and either Florida or USC June 20-22. Derrek Cooper Update OnTexasFootball spoke to a source close to the recruitment of 5-star running back Derrek Cooper (Hollywood, fla./Chaminade-Madonna) within the last hour. The word from the locked in source is that the Texas visit was an absolute home run for Steve Sarkisian and Chad Scott. Word is Cooper was very impressed with the Texas program in every way. I’ve read a lot of conjecture about why Texas would add a scholarship quarterback like Troy transfer Matthew Caldwell. Well, it’s actually pretty simple. There are two driving factors. 1. Caldwell, who started the final five games for Troy last year, has lots of playing experience. He makes it a real competition for Trey Owens for the no. 2 QB spot. As a reminder, Sark wants competition everywhere. It’s not Sark’s job to make it easy on any of his players. And this is not Sark pulling the rug out from under Owens. Texas has added a former starting quarterback to its roster. Troy transfer Matthew Caldwell has signed with the Longhorns. Caldwell, who finished 141 of 223 for 13 TDs with 8 INTs in 2024, started six games for Troy last year. Caldwell is considered a "depth piece" for the Longhorns who are otherwise talented but very young at the position. Arch Manning is expected to start but behind him are redshirt freshman Trey Owens and true freshman KJ Lacey. As a grad transfer, Caldwell is clearly a stop-gap measure in case of injury. A Sunday surprise! The Texas Longhorns have added its sixth transfer portal addition of the spring at a position maybe no one was expecting – quarterback. Former Troy QB Matthew Caldwell will join the Texas quarterback room in 2025. Caldwell started six games for Troy in 2024, throwing for 1,608 yards and 13 touchdowns. There remains the possibility of adding another player or two out of the portal in the coming weeks. Happy Friday. A rather eventful first weekend of no spring ball. Finals are ongoing currently on the 40 Acres, signaling the end of another semester for students.
