Potential big weekend on The Forty Acres OnTexasFootball believes this could be a big news day on The Forty Acres. And there are a number of reasons for that across multiple sports. 1. Texas awaits the 6 p.m. announcement of OTF 4-star IOL Keyon Hemphill-Woods of Columbus High. The 6-foot-3, 275-pound quick and physical two-way standout is considered a Texas lean over Auburn, Texas Tech and Texas A&M headed into his announcement. 2. The basketball portal is open. Zachariah and Zion Branch, brothers who played wide receiver and safety for USC, respectively, are expected to visit Texas in the coming days. The Branches have already visited Georgia and Arizona State. They are expected to visit Miami and Texas before making a final decision. Tennessee is also attempting to receive a visit. 247Sports national reporter Matt Zenitz reported earlier today that Florida State defensive end Marvin Jones Jr. is expected to visit Texas today after visiting Oklahoma yesterday. As it stands now, five-star cornerback John Meredith III has official visit dates scheduled for: Alabama -- May 29-31 Texas -- June 5-7 Texas A&M -- June 12-14 Ohio State -- June 19-21 OTF has learned that a shakeup could be made to the slate, with the Aggies visit moving to the May 29-31 slot and the Alabama visit either being called off or moved to another date. Meredith has the OT7 finals from June 12-14, making a visit that weekend impossible. Some practice intel: * The absurd catch everyone saw from Cam Coleman came when Arch Manning threw a wobbler late over the middle. But Coleman adjusted and swallowed it. Amazing catch! Apparently, there were some hoots from a couple of offensive players afterward, including Raleek Brown. * The kitchen sink. That’s what Kyle Flood is throwing at left guard right now. Anyone and everyone is getting a look early in camp. I wrote earlier this morning that Jordan Coleman saw action there. Well, add another name to the mix. Texas was out at Denius Fields this morning. Some notes we've picked up: - Sark said the Longhorns ran 16 consecutive run plays early in practice. The focus was on making the offensive and defensive fronts focus on being physical. "At the end of the day, we have to be able to run the ball and stop the run," Sark said. - Sark singled out Melvin Siani for his willingness to be physical, but also mentioned the other experienced guys like Brandon Baker, Connor Robertson and Trevor Goosby. - Sark described the left guard situation as one still under scrutiny. A few notes I picked up from today: - They were in shells today. - Arch Manning participated in pass skeleton drills but not beyond that. - Kohen Brown split the defense a couple of times for long plays today. Ryan Wingo looked good, as did Cam Coleman, Jermaine Bishop and Sterling Burkhalter. A couple of practice nuggets now that the Texas Longhorns are within ten days of kickoff for the 2024 season. *** – C Jake Majors has been back on the field for the past two days of practice. Majors has been active and participating in team drills despite being held out of the Longhorns second scrimmage of the fall on Saturday with an ankle sprain. Again, to echo Steve Sarkisian, it was more a "business decision" to hold Majors out of the scrimmage. Some practice notes from yesterday... This is not a loaded practice report. But here are few things: - DJ Campbell was back in action. So the shoulder issue that occurred on Saturday, at least for now, seems to have been not much to worry about it. Fingers crossed we don't hear much about it and it was just a bruised shoulder or soreness. - The practice itself was described as lighter yet quicker than usual. As expected, the practice before a scrimmage is almost always a little less intense from a physicality standpoint. It’s a beautiful day in Orlando with lots of sun and a steady breeze. - Colin Simmons worked some with linebackers in a punch-out drill. - Michael Taaffe is the only opt-out who is here with the team in Orlando. - While Ryan Niblett worked with the first team punt coverage unit, Daylon McCutcheon was returning punts. After a two round bye, the Longhorns are now set to square off against Tennessee tomorrow at 3:00 PM (SEC Network). The fact of the matter is, Texas has one goal this tournament: Stay healthy. They already won the conference and the tournament itself doesn’t really matter. The Horns just want to walk away with zero injuries and as much rest as possible before hosting a regional. — So who will pitch tomorrow against the Volunteers? Texas will begin its busy month of official visits this weekend when six prospects in the 2025 class make it to The 40 Acres. Of course, we have seen Texas put on shows before while hosting official visitors. Whether it be exquisite foreign cars or extravagant welcomings, Texas delivers. AUSTIN, Texas — Without Ryan Niblett’s Mr. October heroics last fall, Texas could have had a drastically different looking season. In a three-game stretch against Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Mississippi State, Niblett returned seven punts, averaging just over 38 yards per return, each time either finding the end zone or setting the Longhorns up in good field position at critical moments in the game. To put it into perspective of how impactful Niblett was in that stretch, that’s almost 12 yards more per return than the nation’s leader last season (Iowa’s Kaden Wetjen, 26.81). There is a tremendous emphasis on recruiting for this game in Austin, Texas on Saturday. Of course, it certainly helps that the top-five matchup between Texas and the Georgia Bulldogs will be the undisputed game of the week and will have Gameday and all of the glitz and glam that goes with that.
