As of late last night, there still was no word on the decision of Indianapolis WR Monshun Sales, one of the nation’s top 10 players. I am told that Texas remains in contention. Sales is set to announce his decision later today on the Pat McAfee show and is expected to choose between Texas and Indiana. Communication with other schools, including LSU and Ohio State, has been limited, while talks with the Horns and Hoosiers continue. ** Having covered recruiting for 30+ years, it’s extremely rare that one school or another doesn’t know the true intention of a recruit heading into the announcement. But, if either school knows the decision as of this m…

Each of the OnTexasFootball Staff members ranked our Top 40 players on the Texas football roster for our inaugural Top 40 on the 40. All of our selections were compiled and averaged out to produce an overall Top 40. Each Thursday in the month of July, we’ll release the list 10 players at a time, along with a video breaking down the selections. For today, July 16, we’ve reached from Nos. 20-11 ICYMI: Nos. 40-31 from July 2 Nos. 30-21 from July 9 No. 20 — Alex January January established himself early in his Texas career as a true freshman. In all, he’s started eight games, appearing in 21 overall. He’s solidified his standing among t…

As Texas’ commits continue inching closer to their senior seasons, OTF provides one thing I’d like to see from each defensive Texas commit. Kasi Currie, DL, Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon — Improved ball get-off as a senior. Currie is one of the most intriguing prospects in the nation as a two-way lineman that wins with power and athleticism, but he’s never the first one off the ball and needs to improve his BGO ability and reactiveness to the snap. Tyler Alexander, DL, Wellington (Fla.) Palm Beach Central — Alexander has a lot of impressive flashes or splash plays, but down to down consistency and the motor will need to improve. It’s easy to assume it will i…

Texas women's basketball made a big splash on the recruiting trail on Thursday, landing 6-foot-7 center Jayla Forbes out of Monteverde Academy in Florida, she announced on her social media. Forbes chose the Longhorns over a long list of offers that included Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and UCLA, among others. The newest UT pledge has long been a top target of the Texas staff's, visiting earlier this year for a multi-day stay when the Longhorns faced Kentucky. Last season she averaged 10.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game at the high school level. She helped Team USA to a Gold Medal finish this year at the FIBA 18U AmeriCup, averaging 7.4 points an…

A pair of big boy recruitments are set to finalize soon. Indianapolis WR Monshun Sales, a top 10 player in the country, is slated to choose between Texas and Indiana on Friday afternoon. The Longhorns remain in the mix. Neither team has been told yes or no as of yesterday and communication lines remain open. The Longhorns are hopeful but I think it's important to stop short of saying optimistic. The Horns are well aware of the high stakes here and how recruitments like these can come down to the wire. Landen Williams-Callis, the state's top running back, publicized yesterday that he will announce his decision August 1. A national report also mentioned …

Texas 2027 Recruiting Class Superlatives ...so far Was driving along I-10 and then south on I-95 on a long trip. Part of the mind racing on a long trip centered around the 2027 recruiting class so far, and handing out some class superlatives awards headed into senior seasons. Best Will Muschamp defensive scheme fit... Cameron Hall as a versatile defensive lineman will be 6-5, 280-285 pounds down the line (if not closer to 300). He will be that 5-tech defensive lineman playing the run in the SEC, that can also be a interior pass rusher with high-end athleticism. Highest upside recruit... Tie between Ismael Camara and John Meredith III. As an offensive ta…

As Texas’ commits continue inching closer to their senior seasons, OTF provides one thing I’d like to see from each offensive Texas commit as seniors. Ty Knutson, QB, Smithson Valley — Knutson plays for one of the state’s top programs and is rarely tested in the regular season or the first few rounds of the playoff. That said, even though the competition will usually allow the Ranger to do mostly everything on time and at their pace, I’d like to see Knutson gain more experience in situations where the play breaks down and it’s on him to extend it. Whether that means using his legs to take off or getting creative in the pocket before hooking up with a receiver downfie…

Let's Talk the 2026 Running Game **** I will call this one a mini-Rabbit Hole, but it did take me down an interesting path. It's the middle of July. SEC Media Days is next week. There is no intra-conference drama at the moment and no coaches are stirring up clicks (for the time being) and recruiting is slow. What on earth is there to discuss? Can I interest you in a beat-to-death topic about the Texas running game? If you have made it this far, thank you! At this point, you might as well stick around. *** I don't think there is a single area of the game of football that Texas must improve on more than the running game in 2026. It has bee…

Earlier this week, Texas announced it would be bringing three players to SEC media days next week. The three (Arch Manning, Trevor Goosby and Colin Simmons) come as no surprise. This off-season, we’ve focused a lot on the players who have joined the team via the portal or high school recruiting. And perhaps not enough on those returning. Alas, the shiny new toys always get the most attention. But the reality is, the nucleus and the backbone of the 2026 team was already on campus. In fact, Texas fared just as well at retaining key players from 2025 as they did attracting them this off-season. What would this team look like without Ryan Wingo, Jelan…

It’s hard to argue any team attacked the high school ranks, transfer portal, and retention more effectively than Texas men’s basketball this offseason. The Longhorns, fueled by Sweet Sixteen momentum, have a roster capable of a deep run next March. 2026-27 roster Isaiah Johnson, 6-2, 182 Mikey Lewis, 6-3, 195 Amari Evans, 6-5, 220 Joe Sterling, 6-4, 205 Austin Goosby, 6-5, 205 Bo Ogden, 6-6, 215 Elyjah Freeman, 6-8, 205 Matas Vokietaitis 7-0, 255 David Punch 6-7, 245 Marcus Spears Jr. 6-10, 215 Lewis Obiorah 7-1, 255 Coleman Elkins, 6-11, 235 John Clark 6-9, 245 Mantas Laurencikas, 6-3, 185 Anthon McDermott, 6-5, 200 Vegas i…

Texas received good news yesterday when Ethan Mendoza made the decision to return to school. Longhorns assistant coach Troy Tulowitzki met with Mendoza and his family yesterday at their home in Bedford and the two parties agreed it would be best for him to finish his final year of college baseball in Austin. Unfortunately for Mendoza, he will require shoulder surgery, which is set to take place this week. As far as a timetable for a return goes, that is currently up in the air. Last season Mendoza went .278 at the plate with 52 runs, 14 doubles, 10 home runs, 50 RBI and 11 stolen bases. -- If Mendoza isn't ready by the time practice rolls around, …

As of yesterday, Texas remained involved in the Monshun Sales recruitment. The blue chip receiver from Indianapolis and his representation remained in contact with multiple parties. Sales likely has already made up his mind. However, neither he nor his representation are letting on to those behind the scenes. He is scheduled to announce his decision this Friday, July 17. ** As with Sales, there are some who are trying to read too much into every aspect of Easton Royal's recruitment. The New Orleans star has told nearly everyone that he is shutting down his recruitment externally, so he can focus on his decision internally. Trying to jump the …

Tuesday Recruiting: Sales and LW-C The Texas Longhorns and Indiana Hoosiers await the Friday announcement of 5-star wide receiver Monshun Sales (Indianapolis, In./Lawrence North). Indiana has been considered the favorite for weeks leading up to Sales July 17 announcement on the Pat McAfee Show at 11am CT. The Hoosiers have made the 6-foot-5 receiver a completely different level recruit from an NIL perspective than any other in the Curt Cignetti era, and ever. That is by a significant margin. The one issue Indiana has battled throughout this recruitment is no matter the National Championship or not, Sales didn't grow up envisioning himself wearing an Indiana foo…

The modern era of college football is ever-evolving due to NIL and rev-share, and so is recruiting. The further we get into the modern era, the more one-offs turn to trends and the more trends turn to standards as the market evolves and becomes steadier as agents and front offices get more and more data points by the cycle. A current trend taking place in the recruiting world is the acceleration of the recruiting calendar, which is well on its way to becoming a standard. Yes, Early Signing Day is still in December after the regular season, and so is the transfer portal, but the timelines of commitments being made at the high school level have never been earlie…

Notes on the 2026 Texas Baseball Signing Class *** Following the MLB Draft, a look at which high school signees will be making it to campus for Jim Schlossnagle and Texas Baseball. The class originally had 20 members after signing day, and was ranked No. 3 in the country by Perfect Game. Though, since the MLB Draft over the weekend, some changes in expectations are expected given results and signing decisions. But wanted to run down which members of the class are expected on The 40 Acres for the 2027 season. – 3B/INF Easton Autrey Perfect Game Rank: 64th 6-foot-4, 233 pounds A future third base option for the Horns, Autrey will have…

As I reported on Saturday night, we won't see the following in Austin for the 2027 season: INF Beau Peterson INF Grady Emerson LHP Brody Bumila RHP Cooper Harris The majority of those come as no surprise (although there was a little optimism for Harris and Bumila), but the one that hurts the Longhorns is Beau Peterson. The Astros third round selection was supposed to push for immediate playing time at 2nd base next year and the smart choice would have been to go ahead and pencil him in as the starter. So what now? I expect Texas to continue to look for an INF portal guy. Don't be surprised to see a visit or two setup in the near future o…

There is little doubt that the 2026 portal recruiting class will help determine the outcome of this season for the Horns. There are simply too many expected starters at key positions (no fewer than eight), plus all of the specialists. Given that, it feels like it'd be a good time to audit previous portal classes under Steve Sarkisian and how they've transformed through the years, an era which includes the introduction of NIL and now the roster-limit expansion to 105. So how has Sark done in the portal through the years? And how will he do this season? 2021 (6) – All players for all years are listed in order of impact or expected impact for Texas RB/RET…

Monshun Sales and LW-C Five-star wide receiver Monshun Sales (Indianapolis, In./Lawrence North) is set to announce his decision July 17 on the Pat McAfee show. OTF continues to believe the decision will come down Indiana vs. Texas, and the decision will have an an impact nationally. OTF takes a look at the impact of the next two decisions to be announced. Impact of Sales decision ... Should Sales announce for Indiana or Texas, as expected, it will be impactful on on both teams future WR rooms down the line in the 2027 season. That will be talked about more in depth after he announced his decision. Headed into the decision, it's all about how the 5…

If you’re wanting good news, stop here and press the back button on your browser. Do not go any further. As of tonight, I do not expect the following to end up in Austin: Beau Peterson Brody Bumila Cooper Harris Grady Emerson That’s obviously a huge turnaround from what I reported earlier in the week, which was that Emerson was the only one that was a 100% for sure thing. This is a worst case scenario situation for Texas and was not expected to happen. I will go into this more later along with what the plan is now. Will Texas be okay? Absolutely. Does this suck? Absolutely.

While the daily countdown for the season continues to somehow feel slower by the day, the itch for football season is only snowballing. Exactly 8 weeks away from the Texas Longhorns’ season opener vs. the Texas State Bobcats, OTF ranks 2026 Texas home games by recruiting potential. Factors for rankings include quality of opponent, time period of the recruiting calendar, climate, and logistics for dates and times of games. Before we get into it, a quick look at the Texas home schedule by date — *Kickoff time TBD* TEXAS HOME SCHEDULE 2:30 PM, Sat., Sept. 5th — Texas State 6:30 PM, Sat., Sept. 12th — Ohio State 7:00 PM, Sat., Sept. 19…

The University of Texas has the best athletics department in the country after hoisting yet another Director's Cup. It is the fifth Director's Cup in the last six athletic seasons for Chris Del Conte and the Longhorns. With National Championships in volleyball, softball, golf, men's tennis, rowing and track & field in the time span, Texas has certainly added to the trophy room in the north end zone Hall of Fame. Football has come close, women's basketball let one get away, baseball made a trip to Omaha this year and men's basketball is looking promising. Altogether, it is hard to be displeased with the product on the field across all Texas Athletics as …
