In the first injury report of the week, Texas linebacker Anthony Hill was listed as questionable. It’s interesting because that is in opposition to what coach Steve Sarkisian said immediately following the Arkansas game - that Hill would play against the Aggies. Yet it makes sense. Hill’s injury is typically a two-to-three timeframe. The Texas defense needs Hill to be ready in the worst way, especially with TyAnthony Smith sidelined for the first half. Injuries happen in football. And they suck. Sophomore running back Cedric Baxter Jr. went down with a knee injury during yesterday's portion of team drills. Here's what we know so far: 1. This was not a non-contact knee injury. It occurred during team drills. 2. Baxter is said to have not heard a "pop" during the injury. For those who know, that is possibly good news because significant ACL injuries typically are often accompanied with a loud popping noise. 3. Baxter was given an MRI after practice. 4. On Sunday, KJ Green, a highly rated edge prospect from the state of Georgia, released a group of top schools. Texas was not among them, even though he previously had scheduled an official visit to Austin. Why? The Horns pulled themselves out of the race. Texas appears laser focused on Jabarrious "Chicken" Garror, a 6-2.5, 215-pound edge from Prichard, Ala., who has totaled 42.5 sacks in his career. There was a lot of coaching news over the weekend. Let’s start with Tashard Choice, the Texas RB coach who was the object of Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ attention. Clarence Hill, who is a friend who has covered the Cowboys for decades, reports that Choice is unlikely to take the Cowboys job because of significant differences in pay between the Cowboys and Longhorns. In the early 2010s, the hopes of Texas football clung to the development of two quarterbacks — first Garrett Gilbert and then David Ash. Gilbert never made it at Texas. He finished his only full year as a starter, 5-7, before being pulled the following year for Ash. Gilbert eventually made it as a journeyman NFL QB but it was a circuitous route to be sure. Ash, meanwhile, showed a ton of promise, leading the team to a Alamo Bowl win. However, multiple concussions ultimately derailed his Longhorn career. Last week, I said I would check in to see how the coaches retreat went. I’m told it started near Town Lake. That’s where all the coaches gathered and were placed in groups. Their goal? Row to the other side of the lake and back. I’m told it was near impossible and it took all of an hour. Coaches had an issue synchronizing their strokes, one of the boats almost tipped, etc. It was a near disaster. A little Texas high school football news to start your Saturday morning. - Texas commitment Jermaine Bishop of Willis absolutely shredded The Woodlands last night. Bishop rushed for 301 yards and four TDs on 26 carries in 42-30 win. Bishop also threw for another score. As a reminder, Bishop has done most of the work in his high school career as a receiver. He’s just 54 yards away from the Greater Houston all-time record of 3,533 receiving yards, according to the Houston Chronicle.
