Watching Alabama, A&M and Ole Miss go down yesterday while also seeing Texas dispense with yet another SEC team by double digits should give all of us and sense of just how complete this Texas team is. I still don’t know if this is a great Texas team (only the playoffs cantell us that), but it is certainly a complete, well-coached and consistent one. Outside of the loss to Georgia, Texas has only played one other SEC game to a single score, and that came only after Vanderbilt scored a last-minute touchdown. Last night, Kelvin Banks was awarded the Lombardi Trophy. Banks is the fourth Texas player to win the award, and the first since Brian Orakpo. Banks is up for the Outland Award, which is presented to the nation’s best tackle or guard regardless of whether he plays on offense or defense. The winner will be announced later tonight. The Longhorns and Sun Devils spoke with the media this morning to begin the Peach Bowl week of festivities in Atlanta. A couple of takeaways from the media availability time. *** – First, the entire Texas team made the quick trip over to the College Football Hall of Fame – including Lance Jackson, Michael Terry III, Justus Terry and new portal addition DL Cole Brevard from Purdue. Texas has been hit with its second portal casualty of the spring with the news of Payton Kirkland's expected entrance reported first by Hayes Fawcett of On3. Kirkland has been recovering from a knee injury he suffered a year ago and has yet to find a groove back to the field. This spring, Kirkland has often been working alone with the Texas training staff on the back fields at the Denius practice fields. The 6-foot-6 and 366-pound offensive lineman from Orlando, Florida did not appear in a game as a freshman in 2023. Dakorien Moore on his three finalists Duncanville, Texas - Duncanville High 5-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore is down to three schools with a decisions expected prior to his senior season. Moore, 5-11 and 175 pounds, will begin the official process next weekend with a visit to Ohio State. Following the trip to Columbus, Moore will play in OT7 Nationals June 7-9. What a wild few days following Texas baseball. From staff changes to high school commitments to picking up portal prospects, it's safe to say Jim Schlossnagle and his team kept me on my toes all weekend. I spoke with a high-ranking official at the University of Texas this morning. One of the expected outcomes of the scholarship roster expansions will be the creation of more women’s sports teams at Texas. If the numbers divulged by the Yahoo! report are accurate, and the source I spoke with says they are, it creates roughly 60+ new men’s scholarship opportunities compared to just roughly 20 on the women’s side. That disparity will put Texas, and others, at odds with federal Title IX legislation that requires scholarship opportunities to be equal on both sides. The Longhorns returned to the practice field yesterday. Sark and staff are trying to treat this like a traditional game week in many ways, including practice. But there are some things that are different. The Horns will travel to Dallas on Wednesday, a full two days before the game, instead of just one. That pushes their practice schedule up two days.
