As of 12:01 this morning, the transfer portal has officially opened. It promises to be the wildest ride of college football free agency that we've ever seen. Around the nation, teams and their personnel departments are literally scrambling to make it all happen. But hopefully it won't be so crazy for Texas. Texas took it on the chin yesterday. The Horns were blown out early by the Aggies in baseball and the softball squad lost a tough one to Oklahoma. Both will look to bounce back today to salvage at least one game in their respective series. ** While Gerry, Hank and CJ all followed football recruiting closely yesterday, there’s other roster movement going on behind the scenes. While official numbers may be hard to come by, the NIL festivities held in Austin were a resounding success. The Texas One Fund, the university’s chosen fundraising arm for NIL activities, is thought to have raised several million dollars over the weekend through its Friday golf tournament and Saturday night concert. I texted with a friend who covers the state of Georgia recruiting and asked him about Justus Terry. Here’s his response: “A true game wrecker guy that you can win 1 on 1 with up front. He has a huge motor. As crazy as it sounds, I think he has a lot left in his ceiling. This is not a kid that comes from a powerhouse school where he has been shoving protein shakes in him since the seventh grade. I really like the comparison of Devonte Wyatt from Georgia, who was a first round draft pick a couple years ago to Green Bay at DT.”

We’ve talked all off-season about which Longhorn could be the team’s breakout star in 2025. Arch Manning could easily fit that bill. After all, he has only started two games. But the national media already has him pegged as a Heisman front-runner. How can I call someone who is favored to be in New York in December a “breakout” star? We’re 10 days out from Texas football players and coaches getting back on the grass to officially begin the 2026 football season. A look at WR targets The Texas staff has been out on the road for the majority of January concluding Friday. That includes wide receivers coach Chris Jackson. Jackson will conclude his month of seeing top prospects in New Orleans today, and is scheduled to be in Florida Friday. Hopefully some of you got a chance to read some of my notes from yesterday’s practice. I have a few more to add below. - I mentioned a likely starter was sidelined on Thursday. I didn’t mention his name because I was awaiting word on exactly what the issue is/was. Since another site went ahead and ran with the name, I can confirm that that player is tight end Michael Masunas. However, I do not know exactly what the injury is. I can confirm it’s an injury of some sort, though I’m not led to believe it’s long term in nature. Masunas has had a bit of a history with soft-tissue injuries in his career. Former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown is expected to join the Texas staff in an analyst role. Brown was the head coach for the Mountaineers for six seasons and for Troy the four years prior to that. He also experience coaching in the state of Texas as the former offensive coordinator for Texas Tech. Brown is known for an offensive style that utilizes his running backs heavily in the passing game. Brown worked with Texas running backs coach Chad Scott in Morgantown. View full news story

A few notes I picked up from today: - They were in shells today. - Arch Manning participated in pass skeleton drills but not beyond that. - Kohen Brown split the defense a couple of times for long plays today. Ryan Wingo looked good, as did Cam Coleman, Jermaine Bishop and Sterling Burkhalter. LB Rocky Cummings Flips to Texas *** Another one! The third flip commit of the week for the Texas Longhorns comes on Thanksgiving Eve from 2026 Carlsbad (Calif.) LB Rocky Cummings. Cummings was offered two weeks ago and very quickly scheduled his official visit for the Longhorns this past weekend against Arkansas. Listed at 6–4 and 220 pounds, Cummings looks every bit of that after seeing him arrive for his OV. It’s Selection Sunday. Texas women’s basketball is likely to receive a well-deserved no. 1 seed today. As for men’s basketball? They’re on the bubble. And the bubble is really wobbly. Rightly so. While Texas has six Tier I wins, the Horns also finished the year with three consecutive losses and losses in four of their last five contests. I'm told this morning that there's a good chance Texas third baseman Adrian Rodriguez returns to the diamond this weekend, as the Horns head to Lexington to face Kentucky. While it's not set in stone as of this this update, a source close to the program feels optimistic we'll see the freshman phenom in action. Rodriguez has been out since the Horns sweep of Missouri. He is batting .326 at the plate, with 31 hits, 14 RBIs, and 5 home runs. As OTF has reported previously, Rodriguez has been "structurally fine" but Texas wanted to hold him out until he wasn't hurting.

Hook ‘Em! Texas is back on the board with its third commitment of the month of July with the verbal pledge from 2025 North Crowley LB Jonathan Cunningham. The Longhorns beat out TCU and Utah for the 6-foot-2 linebacker. After offering back in February, the Longhorns quickly ascended to the top of Cunningham’s recruitment. TCU and the Utes made this very close towards the end, however, Texas and Johnny Nansen came away victorious. Make no mistake, this is the best team the Longhorns will have faced in the NCAA Tournament. Last night, Texas secured its fifth Director’s Cup in six years. For those unaware, the Director’s Cup is a season-long competition among all athletic departments and every sport a university sponsors. Points are awarded to various sports based on their finishes in NCAA national competition. The Longhorns sealed it last night by scoring points in Track & Field giving the Horns an insurmountable lead over Stanford.
