First, and most importantly, I am told that Texas second baseman Ethan Mendoza is okay. He left yesterday’s game due to shoulder pain (the same shoulder that he hurt against Tennessee). Mendoza took part in batting practice this morning. — Speaking of Mendoza, just a week ago I thought he would for sure leave to the MLB Draft. He might still, but it’s not the slam dunk I once thought it was. This will definitely be something to watch going forward and could potentially affect what the Horns do in the portal. — Ruger Riojas will get the start for the Horns tomorrow against Alabama. Junior Tu'upo Announcement Thread Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson DB Junior Tu'upo is scheduled to announce his decisions at 3pm CT today. The 6-foot-3, 192-pound versatile DB that projects to safety is considered a Texas lean over Alabama and Auburn headed into the announcement. Tu'upo made his official visit to Texas June 5-7, and followed with OV's to Auburn and Alabama. He also made OV's to Indiana and Oregon prior to Texas. The NCAA transfer portal has opened. There has already been a scurry of activity. As of this morning, Texas is expected to host between 10 and 13 portal prospects this weekend. The Longhorns may try to sign as many as 15 to 18 players overall during the near month long process. We’ve talked about how Texas coaches have been on the road recruiting for the last couple of weeks and the importance of that. Well, the Horns offered Caleb Siler, a 6-foot-8 offensive tackle from Gunter, as a result of those school visits. Texas Softball Advance to Super Regionals *** Mike White and Texas Softball are moving onto the Super Regionals of the NCAA Tournament. A 7–0 victory over Baylor secured the regional round victory for the No. 2 ranked Horns on Sunday. Teagan Kavan was superb in the circle, allowing just three hits, one of which to the leadoff hitter for the Bears in the 1st inning. The Longhorns are gearing up to host Oregon in the Austin Super Regional, with the first game starting tomorrow night at 7:00 PM (televised on ESPN). I checked in with numerous sources to get the latest on where things stand with Jim Schlossnagle’s club, along with the transfer portal, the Ducks and much more. Each team takes on a brand new identity at the beginning of a season. More times than not, folks will have a brief understanding of what that identity will be by the beginning of spring. A year ago at this time, the identity of the 2024 Texas football team was expected to be around the veteran offensive line that returned four of five starters, a five-star running back that was entering year two and a third-year starter at quarterback. The Texas state track meet starts today in Austin on the campus of the University of Texas. If you have never been and live anywhere remotely close to Austin, I encourage you to go, especially for one of the night sessions this weekend. Do it at least once in your life. The state track meet is one of those special events that stick with you. It’s similar to the old Texas state championships in basketball that were held at the Drum. Fans and athletes from across the state stream into Austin with hopes of returning home with a gold medal. Hoops Report: Workouts begin today; one more roster addition Sean Miller and staff have the current roster of players on campus save freshman center Lewis Obiorah (more on that below). After a week of individual workouts, the team will begin weight training, conditioning and skill-related instruction today. The Longhorns already have the tallest roster in the programs history, and there could be another addition.
