The first portal addition of the winter is former Utah punter Jack Bouwmeester, a two-time all-conference selection, who has averaged more than 44 yards per punt each of the last two years and who has two years of eligibility remaining. Bouwmeester is indicative of the type of additions Texas wants from the portal. Texas wants players who will make an immediate impact at certain positions. 2026 Aledo RB Raycine Guillory Jr. has re-opened his recruitment and decommitted from the Texas 2026 class. Guillory previously had committed to Texas following his first trip to campus on January 20. The Aledo RB had been rehabbing a knee injury and was unable to participate in track this spring as well. Texas just added its 2026 QB in Dia Bell and have continued to recruit the RB position in the state of Texas heavily with Tradarian Ball, Javian Osborne, KJ Edwards and several others headlining the position. Four-star running back Noah Roberts of Chandler (Ariz.) Basha committed to Texas on Friday afternoon over Michigan, Oregon, and Arizona State, among others. Texas received big news following its final spring practice, as four-star edge rusher Derwin Fields of Brookhaven (Miss.) committed to the Longhorns over Georgia, Miami, Ole Miss and Tennessee. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Fields is the ninth Texas pledge in the class of 2027. Last season Fields tallied a whopping 21 tackles for a loss and 11 sacks. Texas currently sits at 15 commitments with a class that could go as high 24 or 25 signees by December 4. Texas has added a former starting quarterback to its roster. Troy transfer Matthew Caldwell has signed with the Longhorns. Caldwell, who finished 141 of 223 for 13 TDs with 8 INTs in 2024, started six games for Troy last year. Caldwell is considered a "depth piece" for the Longhorns who are otherwise talented but very young at the position. Arch Manning is expected to start but behind him are redshirt freshman Trey Owens and true freshman KJ Lacey. As a grad transfer, Caldwell is clearly a stop-gap measure in case of injury.
