We’re twenty-two days from Texas starting fall camp. That also happens to be the same number of players Texas signed in the NCAA transfer portal this year. It’s a record high for Steve Sarkisian during his tenure at Texas. While some of that increase is a direct result of the NCAA increasing its scholarship total from 85 to 105, it still creates an entirely new composition of the Longhorns football team. Texas is “older” as a result of the portal additions. In fact, Texas added nearly as many portal signees in this class(22) as the Longhorns did in the previous two combined(23). Well, Texas took another three star recruit on Friday. Austin Anderson defensive back Yaheim Riley is not among the top 100 players in the country by any service. 2026 Class Overview Texas sits today, June 24, at 15 commits in the class of 2026. How many more will the staff take in this cycle? That remains to be seen, though I can see upwards of ten more commits in the class when it is all said and done. We await the decision of Hollywood, Fla., running back Derrek Cooper later today. As of late yesterday, Texas remains in position to land Cooper. However, all the normal clichés apply: Never say never, don’t count your chickens before they hatch, it ain’t over until it’s over, etc. Cooper, regardless of his recruiting ranking, is seen as a difference maker by major college coaches. News broke yesterday that safety Michael Taaffe had surgery on Monday on his thumb. The injury and procedure are likely to keep Taaffe out this week and possibly next, with the potential of a return for the Georgia game, according to CJ Vogel. Damonic Williams Tuesday Morning Update TCU transfer defensive tackle Damonic Williams arrived in Baton Rouge for his LSU visit Monday evening. I have had some time to decompress from the beatdown in Big D over the weekend that involved the Texas Longhorns returning with the Golden Hat. We just witnessed the first meeting between both schools as part of the SEC, though if you watched the game you would have thought only one school had prepared for the last three years to enter the most physical and athletic conference in all of the sport. After watching Notre Dame and Penn State last night, all I can say is the Longhorns would match up exceedingly well with either of those teams. Both teams played solid, physical defense, relied heavily on the run game and the pass just enough. But Texas has a little something extra to them compared to the Irish and Nittany Lions.
