College Football Live Thread: Week 9 Major Applewhite's South Alabama (1-6) squad vs. Georgia State (1-6) tonight on ESPN2. Applewhite's offense was gutted by the portal, including Mississippi State stud RB Fluff Bothwell and UNC QB Gio Lopez. Games of note Saturday: Not much nationally. UCLA at Indiana, I guess. Heisman Trophy race. SEC has some juice: 8 Ole Miss at 12 Oklahoma 15 Missouri at 10 Vanderbilt 3 Texas A&M at 20 LSU View full news story

Really sad news broke about Chace Calicut yesterday. The North Shore product and Georgia commitment, and one time Texas prospect, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. He was allegedly driving while a passenger in his car was brandishing and firing a gun at another car driven by a fellow student. Calicut, it is written in the arrest documents, tried to block a fellow student’s car on a major street, brake-checked him, pulled alongside him and drove recklessly among other things. Yes, we’ve known about the incident for weeks now. We did not publish or publicize the issue when it occurred because I’m no investigative reporter and we had other Longhorn-related …

At this time, we feel it's highly likely that Temple defensive end Jamarion Carlton picks Baylor instead of Texas, Texas Tech and others.

Typically I would save this for the Friday Roundup, but it deserves some discussion today. Monday, head coach Steve Sarkisian announced WR DeAndre Moore would see limited time in spring practice due to injury. An injury OTF later discovered was a toe injury that was cleaned up after lingering around for the back end of the season. As a result, the Longhorns are down to one receiver on the roster for the spring with a career reception as a Longhorn. Before getting into spring portal predictions or where the Longhorns will go to supplement the room, the youngsters on roster will get their best crack at forming good impressions with the staff and earning time on t…

Not sure how many of you watched the OU-Alabama game last night. The Sooners lost 34-24 after going up 17-0. Quarterback John Mateer was the focal point of an OU offense that scored just seven points over the final 40 minutes of the game and threw a pick six that completely changed the complexion of the game. ** So this is what I want to discuss this morning: If you were the GM of OU, would you bring Mateer back for 2026? Mateer led the Sooners to a 10-2 regular season record and into the CFP. And he could return to Norman next season. On the other side of the coin, guys like Sam Leavitt of Arizona State and Brendan Sorsby of Cincinnati …

There remain a couple more Longhorns who are expected to enter the portal. None of them are starters. I originally expected 6-8 Longhorns to enter the portal. With 7 already entered, I’d adjust that number upward — 9-11 seems more like it at this point.

Even more Sunday practice notes To give the OTF community even more to read on the team thus far. Saturday was a "made for donors" practice. Texas still not in full pads, so take away what you will. - As has been reported, Justus Terry is getting reps on the interior and at big EDGE. His ticket to key PT early in the season is disruption, and so far so good. - Hero Kanu is also getting reps at "big" EDGE, in addition to interior. - Texas likes the aggression they are seeing out of RT Melvin Siani thus far. Contact with a purpose. Maybe more so than any other OL among the first team. - It was wheel route Saturday in DKR. Texas ran u…

Quarterback is where we’ll begin our notes and observations from the first Texas spring practice on Tuesday morning at Denius Fields. On Texas Football was on hand for a media viewing window, getting our first look at coach Steve Sarkisian’s 2025 squad. Trey Owens and KJ Lacey worked behind Arch Manning in drills. While all three quarterbacks had what could be described as a typical first day throwing the football (not all throws were perfect, and those on target weren’t always hauled in), Lacey’s arm talent was noticeable in his first college practice. Everything Lacey (6-0, 182) did was quick and smooth. He didn’t look like a true freshman early enrollee on th…

As of late last night, I am told that Texas still holds the pole position for Hollywood, Fla., five-star running back Derrek Cooper over the likes of Miami, Florida State, Georgia and Ohio State. He is planning to announce his decision Sunday evening. Again, fingers crossed. ** A lot of Texas fans are understandably giddy about what transpired on Tuesday. The pledges of Tyler Atkinson and James Johnson are massive. But perhaps even more, it showcased that the new “rev share” era of recruiting would not - rather, could not - stop the momentum the Longhorns have arduously built over the past couple of seasons. In other words, Texas, even in the…

Texas is back on the practice field early Tuesday morning as preparations for Colorado State have begun. Just 11 days away from the start of the 2024 season, Texas has already experienced some adversity before ever lining up against someone in a different jersey. Having lost both CJ Baxter and Christian Clark for the season due to injuries, the Texas staff has been forced to scramble a little bit to ensure the necessary depth and talent is available for the long run this fall. That even includes the possibility of Texas going out to add another body out of the grad transfer ranks should the right piece present itself. *** Here is what we know + how I a…

If you don’t have the stomach for it, you shouldn’t follow recruiting. Texas lost one of its top running back targets yesterday to Texas A&M in Carthage’s KJ Edwards. Edward’s was long considered a Texas lean until other factors came into play. The Aggies are pushing the limits on NIL this year in recruiting with apparent little regard to the House Settlement. Have they found a loophole or work-around? Or are they confident the rules of engagement will change yet again by the time December’s signing period rolls around (not a bad bet IMO)? Whatever the case may be, it’s clear A&M is upping the ante. How Texas responds will tell the tale. Y…

Derrek Cooper on new RB coach Jabbar Juluke OnTexasFootball spoke with Texas 5-star running back signee Derrek Cooper (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) within the last few minutes. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder knows Jabbar Juluke from the recruiting process, with Jaluke working hard to recruit Cooper for the Florida Gators for well over a year. “Great coach," Cooper told OTF. "Great dude. Other coaches speak highly of him too.” Cooper and his mom are expected to have a phone conversation with Juluke at some point this weekend, but the two have already exchanged text messages. "I spoke with him via text. He said he was going to get on the phone wi…

Sunday AM Recruiting Notes The Texas Longhorns first junior day has come and gone. With Steve Sarkisian being sick and not at the event, it took away the most important part of the day and event - the prospect and parent meeting with the Texas head coach. With that said, there were a lot of notes picked up. Trending Texas ... There are several prospects that OTF believes continue to trend toward Texas, or are now trending to Texas that were in Austin Saturday. Jalen Lott, CB/ATH, Frisco (Texas) Panther Creek Jermaine Bishop Jr., CB/ATH, Willis (Texas) High Toa Katoa, IOL, Euless (Texas) Trinity Max Wright, OT, Melissa (Texas) Hig…

After speaking with sources, Texas OF Will Gasparino will be entering the transfer portal. This is something that I’ve been monitoring for awhile. This was a mutual parting of ways. Obviously the Longhorns have been very active in the portal, already gaining commitments from multiple outfielders.

Scrimmage Notes (No. 1) OTF's first round of notes. MVP Anthony Hill had a hell of a scrimmage. He beat Kelvin Banks and Brandon Baker for would-be sacks. Also had a big hit on Jerrick Gibson in run game. Was said to be all over the field. Injury Morrice Blackwell nicked up (upper body from source) in run fit against the powerful freshman Christian Clark. Quarterback Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning had solid days. Ewers finding Golden, Bolden and Bond the most. Manning was said to have been very strong in the two-minute drill. He and Ryan Wingo played "pitch and catch" in the two-minute drill very effectively. Manning had two, two…

Questions to be answered Steve Sarkisian and staff will close out the busy month of June later this morning with the last weekend of official visitors heading home. OnTexasFootball takes a look at some of the questions that will have to be answered as prospects get closer to making decisions. Jaime Ffrench and Kaliq Lockett Saturday night's festivities ended with at least five parents of visitors throwing the Horns up. One of those were the Ffrench's. OTF continues to like where Texas sits in the recruitment of the Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin High WR. What happens with Lockett remains more of a wildcard, but OTF was told that the Lockett famil…

Texas will hold its fourth practice of training camp later today. It’s scheduled to begin at 6:30pm, just like last night. The first two practices were held in the mid-afternoon of the Texas heat. They’re meant to get a team prepared for the worst conditions. The team got a real feel for that. One Texas player was severely dehydrated and subsequently missed the next couple of practices (yes, I know who it is, but, no, I’m not going to name them). Bottom line, the message from coaches is clear: stay hydrated, get your rest and treat your body right because this is an extremely taxing sport, especially in the middle of summer. ** There’s a little po…

Best Class Scenario: June 9 edition The first big weekend of official visits resulted in three public commitments with more expected in time. This weekend, Texas will bring in 16-17 official visitors with a focus on OL and the defensive front seven. Texas currently sports 11 commitments with a class that is on track to be a fifth straight top 5 level finish. OTF newest best class scenario includes 36 prospects, with the understanding that a mix of these would very likely place Texas in the top 3-4 classes when all is said and done. QB (1) ... Dia Bell, QB, Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage #AllGasNoBrakes OnTexasFootball ranking: 5-star …

A lot of excitement continues to build in Austin, as Jim Schlossnagle and his staff get settled in on the Forty Acres. Some news and notes by position that we’ve picked up prior to fall camp starting: Quarterback - we’ve heard Troy transfer Matthew Caldwell has been relatively impressive in team work this summer. In other words, Trey Owens has major competition for the back-up spot. In fact, if I were handicapping the job today, I’d lean toward Caldwell. Running back - Cedric Baxter is pushing the limits of his recovery. That’s the great news. The realistic news? Still unlikely to be full go until late training camp or post-Ohio State. Christian Clark has looked the best he has since arriving on campus. Wide receiver - the top four have been easy to pick out, perhaps too ea…
