Final Four: 1 seed Texas vs. 1 seed UCLA Game Thread The No. 1 seed Texas Longhorns (35-3) will take on No. 1 seed UCLA (35-1) tonight at 8:30 pm CT in Phoenix with the winner to play for the National Championship Sunday. This is the biggest game for the Texas Longhorns women's program since March of 1987. The reason why is simple. This Texas team has the best chance to play for a National Title since the 1987 team played in the Final Four in the Erwin Center, losing to Louisiana Tech. A few nuggets from the week of practice leading up to the Red River Shootout on Saturday. *** First, the expectation is freshman Nick Brooks trots out for the first offensive drive of the game. Brooks has been the primary recipient of left guard snaps all week in practice. As for the offensive line in general, they know their backs are against the wall. Will that ignite an improved performance? We will see. One final look at the uncommitted prospects on campus this weekend for official visits during the final visit weekend of June. Texas will host seven committed prospects on campus for official visits, eight if you include Isaiah Coleman who is also making the trip. The Combine is officially wrapped up and the next thing on the docket for the NFL Draft hopefuls is the Texas Pro Day on March 26. With that said, the final takeaways from the Combine are this: *** Quinn Ewers Draft Position A hot topic, as you would expect coming out of Indianapolis. Quinn Ewers certainly helped his stock by throwing at the Combine when several of the top arms in the Draft opted to sit on the sidelines and watch. A few final notes on the offensive side of the ball in regards to what to expect for Saturday's opener against Colorado State. *** – The first team guards that trotted out for practice this morning were indeed Hayden Conner and DJ Campbell. Some notes from day one: - The QB room is loaded. Arch Manning has a chance to be a special player. His arm strength, footwork and ball placement are all well ahead of normal would-be first-year starting QB. Trey Owens continues to impress with his arm strength and relative accuracy. KJ Lacy is a departure from the other two. He’s significantly smaller, but moves smoother and is extremely accurate for his age. Really liked the way he looked from a timing perspective. - One of the first things mentioned to me by multiple sources was the size and athleticism of this team. Two different people made comments on how big, fast and fluid the team (as a whole) is. - Another day, another rave for the defense. Texas pitched its second largest shutdown in the season opener in school history Saturday afternoon against Colorado State. My five biggest takeaways from the afternoon at DKR. *** 1. Texas Lived Up to Its No. 4 Ranking That was a dominant performance. All around. Texas scored on seven straight possessions and found the end zone on six straight drives in the middle of the game. Texas is 3–0 on the season and none of the games have been close in the 4th quarter, it is hard to find a more complete team than the one the Longhorns have trotted out to begin the 2024 campaign. Texas dominated on the field today. There is no hiding that. A OIINT victory on the road over a top-10 team is absolutely tremendous. Texas looked legit and like they belong in the National Title conversation – and let’s be frank, they do. *** Big Game Quinn Only Aggies, Sooners and non-ball knowers still claim Quinn Ewers does not perform in big games. Let's get to it. It was a heck of a second start for Arch Manning and the Longhorns end up with a 22-point victory. First Half Offense Texas had the shot gun and it was aimed right at its feet for the first half. It was rather remarkable how each drive stalled in a unique, yet frustrating fashion. Johntay Cook dropped an easy touchdown, Jaydon Blue fumbled right outside the red zone, DJ Campbell and Cole Hutson traded holding penalties. You can even add a partially blocked punt in there too. My five biggest takeaways following the victory over Texas A&M last night in College Station. Unfazed Kyle Field was rocking on Saturday night. It was a legitimately awesome environment to walk into with emotions running high and the stakes as high as they come for a regular season game. Though, it did not matter for Texas. Texas won and yet, folks are believing the sky is still falling somehow. *** Starting With Quinn I will continue to pound the drum in favor of Quinn Ewers for his performance on Saturday. It wasn't perfect and box score merchants will point to the two interceptions as the biggest deterrent from a good day. But it was a really good day for Ewers throwing the rock, especially in the first half. My five biggest takeaways from the afternoon against Arkansas that ended up in a double-digit victory for the Longhorns. Ultimately, everything stays alive and that should be the biggest takeaway of them all! Jahdae Barron Thorpe There is not a cornerback in the country playing more impactful football than Jahdae Barron. In the first half alone, Barron accounted for an interception, a tackle for loss on third down and a sack. The campaign should be in full swing by the Texas Football program and its media department. The Longhorns ended up victorious with a 49–17 drubbing of the Gators. *** Coming Out of the Gates The start for the Texas Longhorns was much better than what we have seen really in all of SEC play so far this season. Texas drove the field easily, though shot themselves in the foot to miss a field goal, but immediately responded for two touchdown drives to get up 14 by the end of the first quarter. Let's get to it! Ewers Play There was rust. Without question there was rust. Ewers missed on throws that he doesn’t miss on and it was arguably the worst quarter of offensive football for a Ewers-led offense that we have seen during his career. Still, however, we saw good moments from the veteran signal caller. Ewers came out in the second quarter and instantly found a groove – maybe it was just a flip of the field and wind that was necessary to unlock the playmaking ability.
