I’m here in Destin, Fla., for the SEC Spring Meetings. Late this afternoon, commissioner Greg Sankey kicked things off with a press conference. Here are my five biggest takeaways from the presser. - In direct response to my question, Sankey declined to answer exactly what rules and/or bylaws that conference leaders would be discussing this week. As we draw closer to June, here’s a look at commitment dates currently set that involved Texas targets and prospects. Take a look. June 1 — DL DeMarco Jenkins, Pearland — Texas is likely to only take one of the Houston area DL, if any, between Jenkins, Jason Johnson, and Raiden Cook (Houston commit). On Sunday, KJ Green, a highly rated edge prospect from the state of Georgia, released a group of top schools. Texas was not among them, even though he previously had scheduled an official visit to Austin. Why? The Horns pulled themselves out of the race. Texas appears laser focused on Jabarrious "Chicken" Garror, a 6-2.5, 215-pound edge from Prichard, Ala., who has totaled 42.5 sacks in his career. We mentioned early last week that multiple offensive skill players were in New Orleans to workout together. North Crowley CB John Meredith III Meredith has never been a man of many words and didn’t reveal much, but he did acknowledge it’s Texas vs. Texas A&M at the top of his recruitment and that he plans to announce his commitment in June after he’s taken official visits. While responding to a fan at the Houston Touchdown Club, Steve Sarkisian gruffed about the non-conference schedule and conference schedule of an unnamed college football team in the state of Texas. While Sark didn’t actually name the team, the assumption is that he was talking about Texas Tech. Last October just hours before Texas took the field against Mississippi State in Starkville, a report surfaced from former NFL reporter Diana Russini stating that UT head coach Steve Sarkisian made it known to his representation that he would be open to NFL opportunities in the offseason. An OTF reader/viewer asked us the other day what exactly Texas is doing to mitigate the risk of something like the the gambling problems of Texas Tech transfer QB Brendan Sorsby from happening at Texas.
