After speaking with multiple folks who attended yesterday's scrimmage, there are two themes that have emerged: 1. The Quarterbacks. Texas has not one, not two, but three QBs who have serious NFL potential, with the ability and know-how to move the team down the field. Granted, Ewers is ahead of Manning, and Manning is ahead of Owens. But all three of them are legit QBs, just at slightly different stages of their own development. Scrimmage Notes (No. 1) OTF's first round of notes. MVP Anthony Hill had a hell of a scrimmage. He beat Kelvin Banks and Brandon Baker for would-be sacks. Also had a big hit on Jerrick Gibson in run game. Was said to be all over the field. Injury Morrice Blackwell nicked up (upper body from source) in run fit against the powerful freshman Christian Clark. Quarterback Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning had solid days. Some notes from Thursdays practice and a little more: ** All off-season we were told that Texas was planning on utilizing Cole Hutson and Neto Umeozulu more during games, not strictly relying on a five-man OL rotation like the Horns did most of 2023. I'm told that some of that rotation occurred on Thursday. The Horns are beginning to get the team and the offensive unit used to it. Hutson, at times, replaced DJ Campbell at right guard and Neto Umeozulu replaced Hayden Conner at left guard during the team session with the first unit on Thursday. Yesterday was obviously not the news any of us wanted to hear. Starting running back Cedric Baxter has been lost for the season with a knee injury sustained in Tuesday's practice. Baxter will have surgery soon and begin the rehabilitation process that is expected to last roughly six-to-eight months. Hopefully he'll be back and ready for spring practice. OnTexasFootball can confirm RB CJ Baxter is expected to miss the majority of the 2024 season due to torn ligaments in his knee suffered during the first padded practice of fall camp, Anwar Richardson was the first to report. The injury suffered at practice "did not look good" sources told OTF and he was quickly carted off the practice field. Texas is back on the board! The Longhorns land a commitment from elite 2025 WR Kaliq Lockett (Sachse, TX) over Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida State and LSU. The 6-foot-2-inch wide receiver becomes the first wide receiver in the 2025 class and continues the trend of Texas having success in the DFW area. Lockett possesses some of the largest hands I have seen at the WR position since I began covering recruiting. He is a great vertical threat, even without having elite speed in his repertoire. The initial MRI results of Cedric Baxter's knee injury have been received. It's our understanding that Baxter and Texas are now in the process of getting additional opinions from other experts in the field as I type this. We do not believe it's a straight-forward case of an ACL tear. However, I was also cautioned that that doesn't mean he's out of the woods either. Even something categorized as a "sprain" is actually a slight tear, and there are other parts of the knee that may have been compromised as well. We'll continue to monitor the outcome here. Injuries happen in football. And they suck. Sophomore running back Cedric Baxter Jr. went down with a knee injury during yesterday's portion of team drills. Here's what we know so far: 1. This was not a non-contact knee injury. It occurred during team drills. 2. Baxter is said to have not heard a "pop" during the injury. For those who know, that is possibly good news because significant ACL injuries typically are often accompanied with a loud popping noise. 3. Baxter was given an MRI after practice. 4. Lockett, 6-2 and 170 pounds, will announce out of a final group of Texas, Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU and Florida State. It has been a hot topic of conversation this offseason – what is the next step for QB Quinn Ewers? Of course the play on the field immediately comes to mind, but perhaps the largest leap could come in the huddle and locker room.
