Steve Sarkisian in his halftime interview with ESPN says QB Quinn Ewers suffered a strained abdomen. Ewers is done for the night with Texas leading 28–7. A strained abdomen can range from a week or two to several months depending on severity. At the moment, severity is not known. Texas enters today 2-0, including a resounding win last week against the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor. But I still think Texas can get better in 2024. Sure, part of that is even better execution. But some of it is also indoctrinating and weaving in additional players into the rotation, particularly on offense. Over in San Marcos last night, Texas State almost pulled off the biggest upset in school history. Arizona State held off the Bobcats for a 31-28 win. At one point, Texas State was up 21-7 in the second quarter, but only scored one TD the rest of the way. I mention that game because this weekend the Horns play Texas State's previous opponent, UTSA. I'm not much for the transitive properties of college football scores or stats, but Texas State beat UTSA 49-10 and amassed more than 500 yards of offense against the Roadrunners. Following my trip to Alamo Heights a few weeks ago, it was clear the teams to beat in this race were Oregon, Nebraska and Texas.
