I was surprised by a lot of things on Saturday afternoon in Gainesville. But I was downright shocked by one: the poor play of the Texas defense. From the very beginning, the interior of the Texas front couldn’t get off blocks. They were whipped time and time again. Florida running backs were allowed to dance in the holes before any Texas defender made contact. And the edges lost contain multiple times. The Gators were in more 2nd and 4s, 5s or 6s, than any of us care to count. Florida controlled the line of scrimmage. That was the story of this game. The second level of the Texas defense didn’t acquit themselves any better. To start, Tex…

Couple of quick notes: 1. I’ve been told that the returning starter in question - the one we’ve been tracking - has decided to stay at Texas and did not enter the portal. So put that one to bed. 2. I am told one Longhorn of note opted for the portal. I will not share or reveal the name at this time. I’m sure there will be guessing associated with this but I’m not going to do that. It’ll come out in 24 hours or less. 3. Overall, I think this was an amazing job of retention by all involved. From Sark, to Brandon Harris and the entire Texas staff, to the certain individuals, the One Fund, etc. The load to bear was tremendous but I think the…

Targets remaining on the board for the Longhorns The Texas Longhorns sit at 17 commitments with the pledge of OnTexasFootball 5-star offensive tackle John Turntine III Friday. With a class that still has up to 10-11 spots remaining, the question from the OnTexasFootball community following the July 4th fireworks was who is remaining on the board for Steve Sarkisian and staff. OTF provides a look at where things stand headed into the next week of announcements. Running back Texas is planning to bring in OTF 5-star Derrek Cooper (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) for an official visit during the season. Miami, Georgia and Ohio State join Texas as t…

With the news of Josiah Sharma and Myron Charles selecting other schools, it puts the Longhorns in a precarious position at defensive tackle recruiting in the 2025 class. Texas, ideally, wanted 3-4 prospects at the position in the 2025 recruiting class. But the Horns only brought in five players for official visits. Three of those are now officially off the board, leaving only Brandon Brown and DJ Sanders. While Texas sits in a strong position for Sanders, Brown is still contemplating multiple schools despite his current pledge to Texas. Both Steve Sarkisian and Kenny Baker clearly have some work ahead of them. What will the Horns’ response be? We…

Texas is definitely in play for the brother tandem Zachariah and Zion Branch, formerly of USC. Zachariah is a highly ranked wide receiver who is an absolute jet. Zion has been a reserve defensive back at safety for the Trojans to this point. We’ll see where this goes. But I am told Texas is a possibility as of this morning. View full news story

Texas Pool Party/BBQ Visitor List The Texas Longhorns will host a number of visitors on Thursday at the annual Pool Party/BBQ recruiting event. This will be Steve Sarkisian and staff's final recruiting event prior to the start of the 2024 season. Last week, a few readers dismissed my assertion that the Texas offense had been moving in the right direction and was becoming a consistent strength of the team. That’s understandable. I wrote and said that right after a paltry 10-point performance against Georgia. Yet here we are after a 52-37 win over Arkansas, and I’ll say the same thing again this morning. And that fact - at least to me - is as clear as day. The Texas offense has emerged as the team’s better, more consistent and more reliable unit. Since the flip switched for Arch Manning late against Mississippi State, he is 99 of 152 for 1,314 yards, 11 TDs and just two INTs. That’s an average of…

Yesterday evening, the University of Texas and Texas A&M sent a joint letter to Texas US Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn voicing their disapproval of the Protect College Sports Act. It’s the first time either school has voiced its opposition to the bill. I texted with a high-ranking Texas official this morning. “It’s important for fans to know that we (Texas and Texas A&M) are unified,” the official said. “I think there was some talk in Washington that we were apathetic toward this bill. That’s not the case.” This puts Cruz in a precarious position as the author of the bill where the state’s two largest universities and university system…

“The next 72 hours is crucial to know who is coming and who isn’t.” That’s a direct quote from someone behind the scenes when discussing several of the big names considering Texas. So please read Gerry Hamilton’s morning update for more specifics. ** Three positions of need have been filled: - Nose Tackle - Inline Tight End - Cornerback Several positions to go: - Running Back (2) - Wide Receiver (1-2) - Offensive Line (2-3) - Defensive End (1) - Defensive Tackle (2) - Linebacker (2) - Safety (1-2) ** Texas contemplated going after two safeties in the portal but with Derek Williams’ announ…

Monday 5pm Recruiting Update Some quick updates... Texas has continued optimism in the effort to flip Oklahoma 5-star offensive tackle verbal Michael Fasusi (Lewisville, Texas/High). Texas has been in communication with the circle of 4-star++ defensive line commit Josiah Sharma (Folsom, Calif./High) multiple times. USC is making it a battle, with the latest conversations in the day more positive. Texas remains confident in the recruitment of 4-star++ WR commit Jaime Ffrench (Jacksonville/Mandarin). Texas has engaged in quality conversations with 4-star++ defensive line pledge Myron Charles (Port Charlotte, Fla./High). Florida won't walk away, to…

Portal Update: 17.5 hours until dead period ends The dead period ends in 17.5 hours, and that means visits will once again begin on Thursday morning. Texas currently sits at 13 commitments/signings in the portal cycle with needs remaining on the offensive line, EDGE and linebacker for sure. There could also be looks in the secondary and potentially at wide receiver depending on if anyone else hops in the portal that would garner interest. A few updates ... Today is the day that Colorado transfer OT Jordan Seaton should officially go in the portal, barring a change. That means the future first round NFL Draft selection in 2027 would be on a campus Thurs…

Jalen Brewster, the nation's no. 1 recruit and a commitment to Texas Tech, continues to visit other schools, including LSU and Texas. He visited the Tigers and Longhorns the last two weekends, respectively. Yet "The J Brewster Living Trust" apparently purchased property in Lubbock this past February while Brewster was still a high school junior. Is this property purchase a hurdle the Tigers, Longhorns or any other school can overcome? It's uncertain. But Brewster, according to various reports, enjoyed his time in both Baton Rouge and Austin, and appears poised to look deeper into other schools in the SEC. Brewster, who is listed at 6-foot-3, 302 p…

These notes are from Gerry, who is on the road today, and myself. * Melbourne, Fla., defensive tackle Brandon Brown, who committed to Texas many months ago, is expected to make a final decision this week, according to those in his inner circle. While still involved in the race, Texas is unlikely to be the pick. LSU, and former Texas assistant coach Bo Davis, have been chipping away at this recruitment for a long time. Oklahoma has also entered the picture of late. * Nathan Tilmon, defensive back from Mansfield Timberview, is expected to announce a decision some time this week. Tilmon originally committed to SMU before backing out of that pledge a couple of weeks…

We remain on commit watch. ** Big 12 presidents meet today to discuss the future of Texas Tech. This comes two days after 15 of 16 conference athletic directors met with Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and told the conference that Brendan Sorsby should not play this season, some going so far as to call it a disgrace to college sports. Likely as a result of that meeting, Tech allegedly told multiple media members yesterday that they were prepared to sue the Big 12 or individual schools if the Big 12 took action against them. Hey, it’s America. Anyone can sue anyone else for anything. But I don’t think the Big 12 or anyone else is quaking in their…
