I was surprised by a lot of things on Saturday afternoon in Gainesville. But I was downright shocked by one: the poor play of the Texas defense. From the very beginning, the interior of the Texas front couldn’t get off blocks. They were whipped time and time again. Florida running backs were allowed to dance in the holes before any Texas defender made contact. And the edges lost contain multiple times. The Gators were in more 2nd and 4s, 5s or 6s, than any of us care to count. Florida controlled the line of scrimmage. That was the story of this game. Couple of quick notes: 1. I’ve been told that the returning starter in question - the one we’ve been tracking - has decided to stay at Texas and did not enter the portal. So put that one to bed. 2. With the news of Josiah Sharma and Myron Charles selecting other schools, it puts the Longhorns in a precarious position at defensive tackle recruiting in the 2025 class. Texas, ideally, wanted 3-4 prospects at the position in the 2025 recruiting class. But the Horns only brought in five players for official visits. Three of those are now officially off the board, leaving only Brandon Brown and DJ Sanders. While Texas sits in a strong position for Sanders, Brown is still contemplating multiple schools despite his current pledge to Texas. Texas is definitely in play for the brother tandem Zachariah and Zion Branch, formerly of USC. Zachariah is a highly ranked wide receiver who is an absolute jet. Last week, a few readers dismissed my assertion that the Texas offense had been moving in the right direction and was becoming a consistent strength of the team. That’s understandable. I wrote and said that right after a paltry 10-point performance against Georgia. Yet here we are after a 52-37 win over Arkansas, and I’ll say the same thing again this morning.
