  2. The dead period came to a close last night at midnight and Texas is back to hosting portal visitors. They’ll start by hosting one today. As usual, we can’t release the name but I can tell you it’s a position of need. — Everyone wants to know about the assistant coach search as the Horns need to replace Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Noah Cain, who left for the same position at Texas A&M last week. Rumors are floating online that Texas has already hired Oregon’s Jack Marder. I can tell you that is NOT the case. I can also tell you that Texas has yet to make a hire, but is working diligently to do so. — There’s been specul…

  3. I’ve spoken about Clemson portal catcher/outfielder Nate Savoie recently and that he was an option for the Longhorns. Texas, along with Texas A&M and Georgia, are the main schools in the mix. Texas A&M believes Georgia’s chances are slim when it comes to this recruitment and that Texas is surging. However, I’m told that the Aggies are falling behind as well. Make of that what you will. — Some national outlets are reporting that Texas is in the mix for Tennessee infielder Manny Marin. I don’t believe there’s anything there at this time. — I wouldn’t expect portal news to be far and few between until the Horns are do…

  4. Over the weekend Texas hosted Notre Dame OF Bino Watters for a visit. Watters then left and visited LSU on Monday. Earlier this week I reported that things looked good for Texas and Watters and that Texas A&M, who also hosted him, believed the Horns were leading. That has now changed. I fully expect LSU to be the destination for Watters and that announcement to come soon. There are a lot of moving parts in this recruitment and it's just one of those things that didn't work out. The Longhorns hosted another visitor earlier this week, however, and I'm told that visit went well. The team leaves for Omaha in just a few hours.

  5. I just got off a media availability on Zoom with Jim Schlossnagle. Texas (40-10, 20-7 SEC) will wrap up the regular season in Norman against Oklahoma (32-17, 13-14) in a three-game series beginning Thursday. Here are a few things to file away: — Max Belyeu had a good day yesterday and, according to Schloss, he's closer to returning than last week. It sounds like a lot will depend on how Belyeu handles batting practice when the team gets to Norman later today. Schloss said they've been surprised that Belyeu is ready to be back in the outfield (the medical staff said that might be the last thing to come because of the act of squeezing his hand while using his glov…

  6. Texas remains No. 2 in the polls after taking the series from a very underrated Ole Miss team. I spoke with a source who felt this weekend would be a defining moment for this team. Texas had yet to have much adversity until Friday night happened and the response was exactly what the staff was hoping for. Winning the series on Saturday/Sunday was HUGE for the players and the coaches. This team is good, really good. If they can stay healthy, the sky is the limit. They'll be tested again this weekend, this time against No. 5 Auburn. Anyway, here's the D1Baseball poll:

  7. I have to hand it to Texas, they’ve kept a tight lid on the coaching situation and it’s been tough to get concrete info. However, I’ve checked with some sources and here’s what I’m hearing: - I haven’t spoken to anyone who believes David Pierce will be the head coach of Texas next year. Not a single person. - Texas has done due diligence on a lot of coaches. A LOT. Including some names that really surprised me. There’s been a lot of people express interest in the job, and rightfully so as it’s one of the best in the nation. - Multiple people thought an announcement regarding Pierce would have been made late last week. Obviously that never happened. Not sur…

  8. It was a successful weekend on the Forty Acres, not only because Texas beat Mississippi State on Saturday, but also due to the fact that many others sports used this weekend to their advantage when it comes to recruiting. Baseball: - As I reported on Saturday morning, Coach Schlossnagle and his staff brought in multiple recruits as we've seen them do at every home game this season up to this point. - This weekend's group was considered to be very "high profile" type players in the eyes of the coaching staff. All six players are some of the best at their position(s). - The last few times this was done we saw multiple commitments as the result, but nothi…

  9. There remain a couple more Longhorns who are expected to enter the portal. None of them are starters. I originally expected 6-8 Longhorns to enter the portal. With 7 already entered, I’d adjust that number upward — 9-11 seems more like it at this point.

  10. USC DT Bear Alexander took to twitter Wednesday afternoon to silence the reports and speculation about a potential portal entry. Reports surfaced yesterday that Alexander would be entering the portal when the window opened on April 15. However, since the morning, the tides flipped and a return to USC was becoming the side with momentum. Texas' hunt for a defensive tackle will continue in the portal next Monday. 11. Before the first practice ... The Texas Longhorns will take the field for the first practice of the 2025 season in three hours. Before Steve Sarkisian blows the whistle for the first time this season, I thought about some categories that the OTF community may like to sound off on. First player to arrive at practice (non specialist) ... Two seasons ago, Jordan Whittington and Xavier Worthy were first to practice every day media was allowed to be at a practice viewing. Last year, it was DeAndre Moore Jr. This year, I'm going with a trio of DeAndre Moore Jr., Emmett Mosley and Arch Manning. Most important player in 2025 ... Arch Manning,…

  23. Best Class Scenario: July 16 edition The Texas Longhorns are knocking on the door of a fifth straight top 5 ranked class after the commitments of 5-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson and the flip of 4-star++ defensive lineman James Johnson from Georgia. Steve Sarkisian and staff have the ability to begin the 2025 season ranked inside the top 5 if they win out for one of the nation's top prospects this weekend. This class will not be complete by the start of the season, however. There will be needs remaining at linebacker, offensive tackle, edge and potentially wide receiver and defensive back for sure.
