The morning after: Culture test coming in Dallas What Texas fans witnessed Saturday in The Swamp was the worst Texas Longhorns performance in a while, quite possibly since at Arkansas in 2021. All week we gave the Florida defense credit for being really good, physical and playing very well in losses at LSU and Miami. But what I saw in Gainesville was deeply concerning. This Texas team boarded a plane to Gainesville with the understanding that this was as close to a "must-win" game as a team can have by week five in a season after the season opening loss at Ohio State. This should have been a team that played with the most physicality, emotion …

In the words of Bobby Burton, "BOOM!" Add five more stars to the 2026 Texas recruiting class! Five-star Grayson (Ga.) LB Tyler Atkinson has committed to the Texas Longhorns! What a win on the recruiting trail for the Texas staff. In one of the most highly coveted recruitments of the 2026 cycle, Steve Sarkisian, Johnny Nansen, Pete Kwiatkowski and the Texas staff come out on top for the 6-foot-2.5-inch, 220-pound linebacker. Atkinson is a MIKE at the next level. Texas pitched to him being the quarterback of the defense on his official visit as well. A lot of credit to Anthony Hill Jr. is deserved in this recruitment as well, who did a great job as the …

Yesterday I said the assistant coaching search was winding down quickly and that's exactly what happened, as the Longhorns have hired Oregon's Jack Marder and former Texas/Texas A&M assistant Caleb Longley. Both are proven commodities who have had results both on and off the field. I reached out to various coaches across college baseball to get their take on both coaches. "Hell of a recruiting duo," one Big 12 assistant told OTF. "Those two at Texas will do very, very well. I think Marder will be a head coach soon. He's well respected." "People make a huge deal about Cain leaving, but both of those guys can recruit and you upgrade on the actual coaching…

Monday Morning Recruiting: Loins girded? The Texas Longhorns are down to 23 commitments with the Florida flip of 4-star+ defensive lineman Joseph Mbatchou Sunday. OnTexasFootball expects there to be at least one more de-commitment in the class leading up to December 4. Now that we got that out of the way, there are positive developments as well. Anyone that has closely followed Texas recruiting under Steve Sarkisian knows the Longhorns will close well too. This morning, OTF provides a rundown of where things stand. In this cycle, take everything with a grain of salt. This is as wild as I've encountered in two decades plus in the industry. Texas in …

Oklahoma State defensive end Wendell Gregory was thought to be narrowing in on a decision late Sunday. However, a new week means a new vision for his future, according to an agent source. Gregory was thought to be deciding between Texas, Wisconsin, Texas Tech and Kansas State. The Longhorns and Wildcats (somewhat surprisingly) were thought to be the primary competitors. Now, after not reaching a deal with Texas to K-State, it appears Gregory’s going back on the open market. Texas will continue to monitor, and things could change at a moment’s notice. ** Cal linebacker Cade Uluave is thought to be deciding between Michigan and BYU with Texas n…

Best Class Scenario: June 24 edition The Texas Longhorns are knocking on the door of a fifth straight top 5 ranked class with six months until signing day remaining. This week will continue to shape where the class is headed with three announcements scheduled June 27. If the Longhorns go two for three, a top 5 class is a near lock by late July. Rod Babers made the distinction in the post-game show between a team that plays sloppy and one that plays undisciplined. Sloppy happens as times. Undisciplined is a habitual problem. Texas played sloppily yesterday, not undisciplined. What’s the difference? There were no major assignment busts, no crazy personal foul penalties (Florida can tell you about those), and no dumb plays in the face of vital game situations. But I think we can all agree, there is certainly room for improvement. Two offsides penalties from Colin Simmons, an unnecessary roughing the punter penalty from Manny Muhammad, holds from Parker Livingstone, Brandon Baker, DJ Ca…

I’m reading a lot of comments on the message board about how Texas was “out-physicaled” by Georgia. I agree with that. But only to a degree. The Texas defense was not. The Texas offense was. But let’s not act like this is some new revelation about the Texas offense. Nor is it a new concept to teams who play Georgia. 1. Texas hasn’t run the ball well all year. 2. Georgia has been the more physical team in every game they have played this season. ** re: issues with Texas running the ball It started early in the year and has carried through all season. At first, we thought it might be a new offensive line needing to gel. Then perh…

Hook ‘Em! A huge, huge, huge addition for the Texas Longhorns comes from the signing of former NC State running back Hollywood Smothers out of the portal. Smothers had originally committed to Alabama after entering the portal in mid-December, however Texas swoops in and flips the talented back. Smothers ran for 939 yards on 5.9 yards per attempt and found the end zone six times as well. He is considered one of the top running backs in the portal and the combination of Smothers and Raleek Brown gives Texas its best running back combination since Roschon Johnson and Bijan Robinson. The portal process has certainly been interesting for Texas, but make no …

We remain on commit watch. ** Big 12 presidents meet today to discuss the future of Texas Tech. This comes two days after 15 of 16 conference athletic directors met with Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and told the conference that Brendan Sorsby should not play this season, some going so far as to call it a disgrace to college sports. Likely as a result of that meeting, Tech allegedly told multiple media members yesterday that they were prepared to sue the Big 12 or individual schools if the Big 12 took action against them. Hey, it’s America. Anyone can sue anyone else for anything. But I don’t think the Big 12 or anyone else is quaking in their…

The ruling last night in Colorado from a federal judge that gives all class of 2022 athletes an additional year of eligibility (aka five years to play five seasons) AND create what amounts to a transfer portal for those players has the college football world frenzied this morning. Personnel departments around the country are scouring NFL rosters, monitoring players who might be cut, and considering their own former players who went undrafted by NFL teams. "This is crazy," one college football GM (not at the University of Texas) told me this morning. "Every time you think you have a handle on the roster, something like this happens, and the world changes immediat…

The University of Texas has its sights on a new head baseball coach. Jim Schlossnagle is set to become the next head coach at Texas, as first reported by Horns247's Chip Brown. Sources have indicated to OTF the hiring will be official in the next day or two. Schlossnagle spent three seasons at Texas A&M, leading the Aggies to two College World Series trips (2022 and 2024). Prior to his time in College Station, Schlossnagle spent 18 seasons at TCU where he and current Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte developed a tremendous relationship and Schlossnagle helped transform the Horned Frogs into one of the Big 12's most formidable programs. Texas fire…

I woke up with a headache this morning. But Mike Elko and every Aggie you know woke up with a bigger one. Why? Because they know they have to play Texas every year. And, despite a multitude of rumors and insinuations otherwise over the past two months, neither Arch Manning nor Steve Sarkisian will be going anywhere but to College Station this same time next year. ** The Longhorns’ regular season was anything but a straight-line. A splatter chart of their offensive and defensive performances throughout the year might better resemble 5-7, not 9-3. But the Horns, after floundering on offense for the first half of the year, and on defense in…

Best Class Scenario: Four days until the early signing period The Texas Longhorns continue to have the opportunity to sign a fifth straight top 5 level class less than a week before the early signing period. The Longhorns currently are awaiting three big final decisions, two at offensive tackle and one on the defensive line. There is also a defensive back spot that Texas wants to fill headed into Wednesday. In the latest edition of the BCS, OTF lists 25 players with the possibility of the class going as high as 26 or 27. Texas State offensive guard Tellek Lockette told OTF he “was supposed to” visit Texas today. But that visit is apparently off. Lockette gave no further reason. ** As we reported yesterday, we were told Texas does not have any of its existing roster expected to enter the portal this cycle. In other words, the roster bleeding has stopped. That means the Horns’ sole focus now is adding folks to the team. Texas clearly wants and needs another interior OL. Can they get one? That’s a good question. Texas has some hope that one shakes loose late in the process. If so, Texas will be very aggressive. ** Indiana just won a national champ…

NCAA Transfer Portal Thread The NCAA Transfer portal for undergraduate students officially opens at 12:01 a.m. April. The portal closes at 11:59 p.m. on April 30. That doesn't mean players must have decisions by the April 30 date, but officially be in the portal by that time. Texas needs in the portal are defensive line (2) and possibly punter (1). The Longhorns will also have some attrition to the portal. We will be talking about it all here. View full news story

Texas Hoops: Simeon Wilcher commits! Vinson to portal; two spots remain Sean Miller and staff have added a much needed combo guard with size in St. John’s transfer Simeon Wilcher. The 6-foot-4 guard fills two needs: a combo guard with size, and has two years to play. The staff was targeting a likely multi-year guard with Truman mark, Chendall Weaver and Jordan People entering their last season collegiately. Miller immediately addressed the needed height and length in the program in short order. The current Texas roster now features six players that stand 6-foot-8 or more. The four portal transfers thus far stand 7-foot, 6-foot-10, 6-foot-8 and a very athletic 6…
