Steve Sarkisian on his future at Texas: 'I’m not going anywhere'

Before he addressed his football team’s upcoming home game against Arkansas, Steve Sarkisian addressed his coaching future at the University of Texas.

Less than a month after Diana Russini of "The Athletic" reported that Sarkisian’s camp had expressed interest on his behalf in potential NFL head coaching openings, ESPN college football analyst Desmond Howard said in a video posted on social media that Sarkisian and the Longhorns could be headed toward a mutual parting of ways.

The following is Sarkisian’s statement on the rumors surrounding his job, in its entirety:

“I’d like to comment on something before I get into our team, something that has been bothering me now over the past few weeks, and that is people reporting that — or insinuating that — there’s a possibility I could leave the University of Texas. And that is absolutely false and untrue. I’m not going anywhere. Never do I do this because I never want to be a distraction, so I never address these things. But, at the point now, I feel like that it’s important that I do do this because it’s important for our team, it’s important for our university. I’ve had no discussions — not with my agent, not with the university, not with any other school, not with any NFL team — about ever going anywhere else. I came here to win championships. I’ve got two kids enrolled at the University of Texas, one in law school and one on our team. I’ve got a third that, hopefully, decides to enroll at the University of Texas next fall, and my wife and I just had our son here in Austin. This is our home. We came here to win championships. We’ve built a damn-good football program over the five years we’ve been here. We’ve been to two College Football Playoffs, we won a Big 12 championship, we went to the SEC Championship Game in Year 1, we’ve had 23 players drafted the last two years, which is more than any other school in the country and our team GPA is at an all-time high. So, can we please stop putting things out there that you have absolutely zero evidence on? And then, can we please stop retweeting, putting it back out there as if it’s true, as if it’s the gospel? It is not true. If you have a question about my future, call me or call Chris Del Conte — our athletic director — and we can set the record straight for you ... [inaudible comment] so, moving forward, when some Joe Blow decides to put something on social media out there, we all don’t run with it like it’s the gospel. Can we all agree on that on this call? And, if you have a question about my future with the University of Texas, ask me on one of these calls, ask Chris Del Conte — he’ll be more than happy to take your call — so that we can set the record straight, so that we can focus on our football team, which is really what we should be doing. Everybody good with that?”

Texas (7-3, 4-2 SEC), which came in at No. 17 by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee in Tuesday’s rankings reveal, will look to rebound from a 35-10 road loss to Georgia when the Razorbacks visit Austin for the first time since 2008.

The Longhorns and Arkansas (2-8, 0-6) will kick off at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium at 2:30 p.m. on ABC.

He makes about 11 million a year. He will be fine. If not move along...

Money is not always the reason for everything.  I think he knows he'll never go broke in football.  How about we let him coach one week without bs distractions.

He should be pissed at himself because the failure of this season is clearly on him and him alone. There needs to be fundamental changes to the way he and his team approaches things and if doesn't make those changes he will be gone in 2 years. These changes are both on and off the field.

I feel like, if Sark could look inside and see things he must change and alter some aspects of his approach and the bones of the staff and continue to grow- then Texas could be dangerous.

If Sark doesn’t continue to mature as a coach, Texas (perhaps) has hit his ceiling.

Let’s hope we’re not there yet. HookEm.

I truly cannot stand Desmond Howard. Weak link on college gameday for ages. He's been an aggie shill for years now, continuously picking them for the CFP in the preseason like every year of its existence.

My favorite memory of Desmond Howard is his grinning turning into despair in the 2025 Rose Bowl game against Michigan. Not sure I have anything against Michigan as a school and program aside from his clown a$$

This is big boy ball. If this nonsense distracts him he ain't up for the job. Perhaps he should focus on his own personal distractions.  He needs to do his job. Fix the team.

Make it the last time, Sark. F what they talking about. We are ungrateful here. Texas was the envy of the cfb world 4 months ago. We haven't had a real shot at such lofty expectations that could be validated until he showed up. Who's better for us... RIGHT NOW... out there? Wtf wants to follow Sark and wth he's done at TEXAS in the last 5 years? Ya'll forgot how bad Herman and LongFinger were? Crazy asf! I said it last year with the 💩ing on Quinn... while he lost his security blanket, all world RB, 3 NFL starting calibur receivers, and a NFL starting calibur TE.

We're young. Wingo is a shining example of exactly what's wrong. He knows the responsibility he's supposed to carry in this offense. He understands what's expected of him. Everyone back home has been telling co-workers and friends he's about to blow... and he's pressing and crumbling under the weight of expectations, instead of playing the game he loves, with love, passion, and pure unadulterated joy. Hard to do with all these grown ass fans and social media scrutinizing your every move.

They will be better from this.. as a whole. Yes, anytime things don't go as planned, changes are needed and evaluations will be had, but Coach Stout used to tell us.. nothing is as good as it seems.. when we won.. and nothing is as bad as it seems... when we lost. It was what we did with the next opportunity... that was all that mattered. 🤘🏿

Is silly? Is obtuse? Lacks any understanding? Big boy ball, lmao. I like you Zura but this is a miss from you.

Some yall surely miss the point. Sark doesn’t care about this but there’s enough noise that parents and 16/17 yr olds need the reassurance. That’s what chaps his hide. That enough idiots run with anything. Someone here still saying a big donor says he’s leading like all our donors are great dudes without agendas. Please.

The machismo angle is so weird. He needs to be Bobby Knight and burn every bridge? Maybe Kirby and b!tch all night at the refs. Yall ask for freeman but he rarely shows out. I guess the Landry’s, Reid’s, and Belichick’s were soft and bad at football.

Can we quit showing our a$$es already? I feel like I’m at a different site right now. When a team is down, we’re supposed to rally in support not join the buzzards circling. That doesn’t mean drink the kool-aid but it surely means we don’t flame unsubstantiated rumors. If other teams are causing this, you all are helping with this nonsense. Time to circle the wagons! 🤘🏽

What Sark or CDC says today doesn’t mean sh*t.  We won’t know the truth until about 3 weeks after the Super Bowl.  I tend to think he’s coming back but if he is he needs to spend some serious time looking in the mirror and commit to fixing the sh*t that’s broken.

Part of the issue is not keeping the roster “old.”   Sark needs to recognize that the portal fixes problems and HS recruits generally sit on the bench burning NIL year one.  Tech brought in 21 players from the portal, A&M 13, and Texas 5.  We lost a number of 3rd and 4th year players to the draft and replaced them with HS recruits while the competition is bringing in experienced college starters.

Texas completely failed to maximize the pre-House settlement Wild West and has been passed by the teams that did.  We could have brought in starting caliber OL, WR, and RB and intentionally decided on only Mosley.

You either play to win or get smoked by those that do.  Sark needs to decide if he wants to win or play “his” recruits when they aren’t really ready for prime time yet.
