LSU DL commit Walter Mathis Jr. visit update

OnTexasFootball spoke with a person close to the Walter Mathis Jr. (Savannah, Ga./Calvary Day). Mathis, 6-1.5 and 288 pounds, and family remain scheduled to make an unofficial visit this weekend for the Mississippi State game.

This will be the first visit to Texas for the Peach State prospect.

Mathis committed to LSU September 6, 2024.

OnTexasFootball rates Mathis as a 4-star++ prospect.

OnTexasFootball also spoke with Richmond (Texas) Randle 4-star DL and Texas A&M verbal Chace Sims just now. He and his family remain scheduled to make an official visit to Texas this weekend.

He attended the Texas A&M-Bowling Green game Saturday. The Aggies staff attempted to get Sims to cancel the visit plans to Texas, but that is not expected to happen.

OTF remains the same on Sims: If the convos go well with Kenny Baker and Steve Sarkisian this weekend, it's a 75-80% chance he flips to the Horns.

Texas vs. Mississippi State visitors list of note
Walter Mathis Jr., DL, Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day - LSU commit
Note: This will be an unofficial visit for Mathis and familly.

Chace Sims, DL, Richmond (Texas) Randle - Texas A&M commit
Note: This will be an official visit for Sims. OTF continues to put the percentage at 75-80% for a flip assuming the visit goes well.

Javion Hilson, EDGE, Cocoa (Fla.) High
Note: Hilson is making a number of unofficial visits, including Texas. The Horns have a legit shot with a final push.

Daylan McCutcheon, WR, Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy - Florida State commit

Kevin Ford Jr., EDGE, Duncanville (Texas) High - 2026 4-star

Toa Katoa, IOL, Euless (Texas) Trinity - 2026 OnTexasFootball 4-star (added September 21st)

Nicolas Robertson, IOL, Klein (Texas) High - 2026 OnTexasFootball 4-star (added September 22)

Gerry, on Sims - “if the conversations go well” meaning if Sims is made to feel like he is a priority?  Sounds like he wants to be a horn so if the staff wants that too, it’s all but over?  Fair read?

No, Texas wants him. This is a visit for Texas to make the flip. If Sims convos on Texas, DL development, how Sark and Baker see him and other stuff are positive, it's going to happen. He didn't make a June OV, like he did to others, so in person convos are key.

Gonna start having to turn away DTs at this rate.  Would love to get Mathis and Sims. Seems like Sims and Simpson would be easier to flip but we have to shoot our shot on Mathis and Wynn.

Mathis, Mbatchou, Wynn and Sims - taking shots.

Jahkeem Stewart could get on campus - we shall see.

Mathis & Mbatchou PLEASE. Of course would be very happy with Sims &/or Wynn as well. But those are the guys for me. Stewart if he gets on campus would vault into the top tier of guys for me as well. Regardless, we will end up with the best DL class at Texas maybe ever.

@Gerry Hamilton, so is this basically a first come first served type of situation with Sims, Simpson, Mathis, Mbatchou, Wynn, etc?? First two to commit are in and then we shut it down....??

Not necessarily if 5 of that group (counting commits) wanted in. But that's not a likely scenario

the unofficial this weekend for Mathis is great bc if things go well, we will get him back again for an OV to seal the deal!

For me its Mathis and Wynn followed closely by Simms and Mbatchu.

Now do the DBs. We want Dijon. With Bijan’s brand, we’re a mustard school now.
